Mistake fares and rare deals from Canada

Mistake fares, caught first.

Airlines sometimes publish a fare far below what it should be. Squirrel! watches the routes Canadians fly around the clock, and posts the deepest fares as soon as they appear, re-checking them live wherever we can.

    ON WATCH YYZ

    Live mistake fares

Cards marked ✓ Live-checked were re-priced by us before posting; the rest were found by travellers on Aviasales today. They rarely last more than a day, so check the final price before you pay.

    Rare deals

Fares at least 40% below what the route normally costs. They look like sales rather than mistakes, so airlines are unlikely to cancel them, but they go fast.

    Cheapest fares right now

Not mistakes: the lowest regular fares we're seeing today, compared with what each route normally costs that month.

    Oreo's core routes

Magenta lines are live mistake fares and rare deals; grey lines are our core routes, re-priced live every month. On top of these we check every destination from our departure airports around the clock.

    What normal costs

Typical fares on every route we watch, learned from the prices we check each day. Use it to tell a real bargain from a routine sale.

    How a fare gets here

    1. We scan

Every 15 minutes we check prices travellers are finding from 21 airports in Canada and the US to every destination, six months ahead: one-way fares and round trips of 5 to 14 nights.

    2. We compare

Each fare is measured against what that route normally costs in that month, for that kind of trip. Anything under 60% of normal is pulled aside.

    3. We post, then re-check

Deep fares found that day are posted straight away: under 35% of normal as Mistake fares, up to 60% as Rare deals. We then re-price them live where we can; the ones that hold up get a ✓ Live-checked tag, and fares that disappear are taken down.

Before you book a mistake fare

    • Book quickly, through the airline or the booking link shown. The final price is the one you see at checkout.
    • Airlines can cancel a mistake fare. Wait a week or two before booking hotels or anything you can't refund.
    • Don't call the airline to ask about the price. It is the fastest way to get it pulled.
    • Each price says whether it is one-way or a round trip. Prices are approximate and can change within minutes.

    Questions

    What is a mistake fare?

A mistake fare is a ticket an airline or travel agency publishes far below its real price, usually by accident: a currency error, a missing fuel surcharge or a typo in a fare filing. They tend to last only hours before they are fixed.

Will the airline honour a mistake fare?

Often, but not always. Airlines sometimes cancel tickets sold at a mistake price and refund them. Wait a week or two before booking hotels or anything you can't refund, and don't call the airline to ask about the price.

What is the difference between a mistake fare and a rare deal?

On Squirrel!, a mistake fare is under 35% of what the route normally costs. A rare deal is 40% to 65% off: deep enough to be unusual, and more likely to be a sale the airline means.

How does Squirrel! find these deals?

Every 15 minutes we check prices travellers are finding from 21 airports in Canada and the US to every destination, and compare each one with what that route normally costs for that month. Deep fares are posted with the time we found them. Fares we can re-price live get a ✓ Live-checked tag, and fares that disappear are taken down.

    Is Squirrel! free?

Yes, with no account. Some links, like Aviasales and Booking.com, may earn us a commission when you book, at no extra cost to you. That never decides which deals we post.
